About the Program
Spend 6 weeks (mid June-July) with other students living, working, and serving with organizations in Philadelphia while discussing gospel themes of shalom, justice, reconciliation, identity, and hope. You will see lives transformed while learning to live the gospel and you’ll return to campus equipped to live the gospel wherever God calls you.
Issues of faith and justice mesh together for 6 weeks as college students from the Philly area spend their summer incarnationally living, working, and serving alongside each other and local organizations in North Philly. As we explore the God of the city we will dig into gospel themes of shalom, justice, reconciliation, identity (race, ethnicity, gender, class), and hope. It is our dream that in the midst of the city, lives will be transformed while living out the gospel.
The challenge of Gateway was a call to love as Christ, and I quickly realized that my own strength wouldn’t be enough.
(Gateway 2011 Participant)
Gateway Philadelphia is a ministry of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and is designed to serve students of higher education in and around the Philadelphia area, but not limited to Philadelphia area schools. It is encouraged that more than one student from a particular school attend Gateway together so that their collective experience will be enhanced by their learning together and heading back to campus together.
All Gateway participants will be living, dining, and learning in community with the other Gateway participants. (See Housing for more) And all Gateway participants will be interning for approximately 160 hours at local organizations that are working for the good of the community. (See Internships for more) The hope is that Gateway participants will be able to utilize their skills and education to be of service to the organization they are serving.
We will also be spending a lot of time getting to know and learn from neighbors. There is much to learn from the people around us and we want to make sure we pay attention to what God might be teaching us through the people around us.
This summer we will also spend large amounts of time reading and discussing a lot of scripture as well as hearing teachings and having discussions on topics related to a Biblical view of faith and justice.
All of these things combined is the process through which we will be allowing Christ and his love to meet us as we take steps to dig deeper in faith and fellowship with one another.
